CAMPFIRE APPLE PIE SANDWICHES

by Linda Carter
(Warrington PA)

Using a cast-iron or other metal campfire pie iron (available on internet) prepare the sandwiches:

Butter two slices white bread.
Put one slice in each side of pie iron, buttered side against the metal.
Put inside: thin sliced peeled apples, and sprinkle liberally with sugar, and a little flour or cornstarch.
Close pie iron, trim off ends. Cook over open flame or gas burner.

Not sure about how long, follow manufacturer instructions - but pie should turn out crispy and delicious, it's almost magical how good it turns out. I haven't had any since my mother made them when I was a child. Maybe I'll get myself a new pie iron and experiment.

Yummy - Sounds Delicious
by: Akrista

I love apple pies, Linda, and this one sounds delicious! They kind of remind me of the little fried pies we used to get in our lunch.

I wonder if you could cook them over a flame indoors on a gas stove? That way we wouldn't have to wait until we went camping, lol.

I agree with you about getting a pie iron. This would be a very fun, (and tasty), experiment. I may need to try it out as well.

Thanks so much for adding the recipe!
